My Entrepreneurship Story

I was raised by my single mother who played an amazing role as the mother and the father to my brother and I. Even though most of the time we were barely getting by, I was able to watch and learn from her as she grew a nonprofit organization and as she is currently developing her own company. My mother never let her long work hours or the limitations of welfare stop her from living the best life she could. She loved volunteering and watching us play football and baseball. As team mom she had my team fundraising on numerous occasions to purchase uniforms, padding, snacks, and pay for the referees. After doing this for two years of doing this she saw that pop warner weight limit leagues discriminated against children who were big and tall but very young. That is when she decided to start a non for profit no-weight limit team in a new league with a few parents.

It was there that I was able to see first-hand how she created a functioning organization from scratch. She got the licensing, certifications, and permits to run her park on a public baseball field which she then painted a hundred-yard football field for dual use. She used her degree in art digital media to market our athletics all over Duval county in Jacksonville, Florida. From yard signs to websites, she got over a hundred parents to bring their children out to join. She created a voting system for positions in the park including a treasurer, coaches, a secretary, and a vice president. She designed and ordered our baseball, football, and cheerleader uniforms for every season. As time passed and job changes occurred she left the park to the next generation of parents.

During this time, I had the chance to work in the concession stand, find multiple ways to generate funds with my team, and most importantly, I was able to see someone fix a problem with an idea they turned into reality.

I have taken ENT3003 because I want to start my own journey by one day using my ideas to change the life for my family financially and hopefully improve the quality of lives for others. You can have tons of knowledge or lots of money at your disposal, but you still need a way to create solutions and make them happen. I hope that this course will teach me to create and apply my ideas in the real world.
